Uniface helps farmers protect their herds

Dairy cows can enjoy better healthcare thanks to a system created using Compuware’s Uniface development environment. Dutch company NRS provides a system called IRIS, which enables farmers to maintain and access accurate historical records for each animal.

Leg problems in cattle are a concern for the dairy industry, from a commercial as well as an animal welfare viewpoint, because affected cows may yield less milk or have to be slaughtered early. Recently, Uniface has helped NRS to create Digiklauw, a PDA-based system that integrates with IRIS over a wireless link to provide leg-care contractors with on-line access to the history of each cow. Prior to Digiklauw, the specialists would have been dependent on farmers for the information they need. Now they can access reliable, up-to-date records directly, to ensure that cows receive the treatment they need.

White paper: why you need an application platform suite

In many enterprises, the application server is obsolete. It is being replaced by the Application Platform Suite (APS) to meet the challenges of adopting SOA and BPM, integrating diverse applications and data sources, and rapidly customising optimised web interfaces.

As well as an enterprise application server, an APS provides a portal product and an enterprise integration suite. Ideally, it will also include process modelling and other BPM functionality. It is essential that these parts are fully integrated and that the APS functions as a single logical unit.

Compuware’s Uniface APS comprises Uniface itself, Uniface Flow and Uniface View. It offers fast, powerful and flexible application development; platform and DBMS neutrality; efficient integration using all major types of middleware; strong support for SOA and BPM; a comprehensive set of user interface options; and a deceptively simple, easily installed and maintained enterprise portal.

InnoJasa’s Thorsten Walther steps into the spotlight

German software architect Thorsten Walther was profiled in the Developer Spotlight section in Compuware’s global Application Delivery Management newsletter in December. A Java developer for the last eight years, Walther is a recent convert to OptimalJ. He has found it makes development projects much quicker, generating up to 70% of the code and leaving him free to focus on getting the architecture right. Walther currently runs a software development and project management company, InnoJasa, based in Ostfildern in Germany.  However, his long-term ambition is to move to the States to set up a new business there.
