Vantage technical tip: latency across a link

When performing captures using ApplicationVantage there are times when it is not possible to perform multi point captures, or when Active Latency Detection will not work. However, it is important to understand the latency on the network in order to understand whether it is having a significant impact on the application transactions.

A quick way to gain an insight is to look at the TCP connection setup within the ‘Packet Trace’ view of ApplicationVantage. Looking at the difference between when the TCP Connection Setup ‘Syn Packet’ was sent and when the ‘Syn Ack’ reply from the server was received will give an indicative value for total latency.

We use this because the TCP connection setup is done on the Network stack not the Applications stack, and so does not incur any delay from the server side.  A number of TCP connections may well be initiated during the transaction’s conversation between the client and the server and so an average feeling for latency can be gained and used with the Single Trace Adjust Functionality of ApplicationVantage.
