In ApplicationVantage 9.8, Compuware removed the NUTT (Network Utilisation and Transit Time) analysis view and replaced it with a new Time Plot view to aid in better TCP flow analysis. The Time Plot view brings with it a raft of new enhancements that will aid users in diagnosing Bandwidth-, Latency- and Congestion-sensitive transactions.
TCP charts quickly highlight common bottlenecks such as window size limitations, frozen windows, and payload in transit. Use the Split View option to view these behaviours for specific bottleneck threads, sending durations and conversations (a feature not possible with the old NUTT view). Cumulative charts provide valuable insight into transaction behaviour.
In total, 28 different graphs are possible with the Time Plot view. For quick and easy access to commonly used charts, the right-hand mouse button can be customised to display your own favourites.
Each series has a direction specification. Most chart types offer information in the client-to-server direction, server-to-client direction, and bi-directionally between the client and server. In cases where only bi-directional data can be shown, C«S is the one option. You can ask to have the trace’s direction displayed, and can also reverse the direction.
It’s possible to give each series its own axis and have marks displayed on the axis where there are actual data points. Use different axes when the scales are much different between the two series. The data point marks are useful when you want to see how data is distributed, or to view gaps in the domain and the range.
To open the Time Plot Properties dialogue box, select Properties from the pop-up menu. Use this dialogue box to choose and load a template, and to select the types of charts you want displayed. (When you need a table rather than a chart, simply right-click the chart and select View as Table.)
You can make changes to a template and then select Apply to invoke the changes. You can also save the changes you make to a template and give your newly created template a Template Title. You cannot save changes to the Default template, but you can rename the template and save it as a new template.
Whenever you need more detail of a specific portion of a chart, use your mouse to create a rectangle over that portion of the chart. Once you release the mouse button, the area within the rectangle will be redrawn to show that area of the chart in greater detail. Use this method to select your desired time range. The right-click Zoom to Fit option allows you to return to the original presentation.
Cumulative charts provide valuable insight into the behaviour of transactions. The charts always start at 0 and increase with time. The slope indicates the rate at which bytes are being sent. If there are few packets being sent, the graph will take on a stair-step appearance.
