  Welcome from Pete Summers

Welcome to the July edition of Compuware’s customer newsletter, Insight.

We have several webcasts for you this month. In our news section, Gartner Research VP Jim Duggan explains the concept of application portfolio management; our own Lori Ellsworth then shows how Changepoint can help with this job.

A second webcast, this time in the quality area, describes continuous integrated testing (CIT), which uses automated techniques to move testing nearer to the beginning of the development cycle, so reducing costs and pre-deployment hassles.

In addition, in the application performance arena you will find an audit of the latest version of Vantage written by the Butler Group. Meanwhile, those interested in development can read two experts’ viewpoints and differences on model-driven architecture and what it actually means.

Enjoy this issue of Insight, and do let us have your thoughts by contacting us here.

Best wishes

Pete Summers, EMEA Marketing Director.

  Development and Integration

The MDA debate
Edwin Schumacher, director product development, application development products, takes a closer look at the recent debate between Carl Zetie, VP at Forrester Research and David Frankel, lead standards architect at SAP. Both gentlemen have strong ideas about what MDA actually is.
MDA tools “show huge promise” – software development
Model-driven architecture (MDA) and the Unified Modelling Language (UML) promise to transform the development process by allowing code creation to be driven from a business model.
Requirements management – get it right first time
It used to seem as though some quality assurance (QA) and testing problems just wouldn’t go away. Vague or inconsistent requirements, tests that don’t relate clearly to the original spec, poor communication between development and testing groups – all these problems have been compounded by today’s complex and cost-conscious environment.

Automated Software Quality

Continuous integrated testing: start at the beginning
Described in this webcast is continuous integrated testing (CIT), an approach that allows application testing to start at the beginning of the development phase rather than at the end.
Quality: Get the whole picture
Today’s IT managers have a lot of objectives to juggle: productivity, compliance with statutory requirements, meeting user expectations and creating customer loyalty are just some of them. Only by seeing IT in the context of the business as a whole can you hope to achieve the right balance.
Technical tip: improve Java performance with better garbage collection
The Java Virtual Machine garbage collector is a feature used by DevPartner Java Edition that takes care of a number of previously troublesome memory problems, but you still need to know how to make the most of this feature. Follow our four simple tips to ensure that your system’s memory doesn’t get clogged up by unneeded objects.

  Application Performance Management

Vantage 9.9 passes Butler audit
The report states: “Vantage 9.9 can help IT executives reduce infrastructure costs by optimising the existing environment, and delivering a higher-service level that benefits the whole business. By managing applications at the business, transaction, and infrastructure level, Vantage 9.9 provides the critical insight needed to improve IT service and maximise existing infrastructure investments.”
Compuware Vantage wins eWEEK award
Compuware Vantage was named the winner of the IT Quality Assurance Tools category during the sixth annual Excellence Awards, by leading IT enterprise news magazine, eWEEK.
Vantage technical tip: making the most of time plot
ApplicationVantage 9.8 replaces the Network Utilisation and Transit Time (NUTT) feature with the more powerful Time Plot.  It’s now easier than ever to find out where network issues are affecting transaction performance. This month’s technical tip walks readers through the new Time Plot facility.

The regulatory net is tightening – can you cope?
Wherever you are in the world, the chances are that regulation of IT is becoming more demanding, not least with respect to data privacy. In this webcast, a Gartner VP John Base describes management strategies that can help organisations see over the regulatory horizon.

Xpediter is first line of defence for Credit Union
Pentagon Federal Credit Union has ambitious growth targets and it needed debugging software that will grow with it. Since replacing a previous solution with Xpediter, it has saved “countless hours” of debugging time and made noticeable productivity gains. Any problems in new applications can be diagnosed and solved as soon as they’re discovered.

Distributed mainframe applications – without pain
Web Services and related technologies extend the reach of mainframe applications to distributed platforms and the Internet. The downside of this sophistication is that problem resolution becomes harder because of the lack of a clear relationship between symptoms and cause. Now Abend-AID helps you to spot, investigate and prioritise problems in this environment, whether or not a program is terminating abnormally.
