Are your applications performing to their full potential?

This month our focus is on Application Performance Management (APM). Many organisations lose productivity when their critical applications experience problems – and sometimes they may even lose business and customers as well.

In this issue we look at how you can use Compuware’s Strobe and iStrobe products as part of an overarching APM programme to make sure your mainframe applications are performing to their full potential at all times.

An APM programme is a set of processes executed by the functional groups of an IT organisation. The benefits are directly proportional to the amount an organisation is prepared to invest in APM – some operate a basic, reactive programme, while others are committed to proactively optimising application performance at every stage in the application lifecycle.

At Compuware we assess an organisation’s level of APM process maturity by placing it in one of five categories:

  • Level 1: Reactive. React to and resolve existing or impending production crises or near-crises caused by application inefficiencies.
  • Level 2: Repeatable. Reclaim production resources through repeatable projects and thereby improve service levels and defer upgrades.
  • Level 3: Defined. Define processes for application performance evaluation at established checkpoints to prevent deployment of inefficient applications and maintain efficient applications as the environment and workload change.
  • Level 4: Managed. Manage accountability for application performance by tracking, measuring and reporting on the APM programme, which will reduce lifetime cost of the applications.
  • Level 5: Optimising. Optimise the APM programme by continual evaluation and improvement to maintain your competitive edge.

Compuware’s Strobe and iStrobe products can help you to increase your APM process maturity by helping you to find and fix the causes of application inefficiency.

In this issue you can read how Strobe Usage Collector lets you gather data on application utilisation to help you optimise usage and productivity. Find out how the new versions of Strobe and iStrobe let you analyse application performance on an ongoing basis, making performance issues easier to pinpoint – and register for our short online training session to see how you can make the most of Strobe in your organisation.

You can also learn how our APM services can help you troubleshoot common performance issues, and download a MIPS management white paper that’s full of practical advice on reducing MIPS consumption and the associated IT costs.

Finally, we are delighted to announce the release of Compuware Optimal Trace 5.0, the latest version of our market-leading business requirements management solution. If you’re looking to improve the way you capture and manage business requirements to ensure the needs of the business are accurately reflected in your applications throughout their lifecycle, then this solution is for you.

As always, we endeavour to make this newsletter as useful and informative as possible. If you have any questions about APM or Strobe, or any feedback about the newsletter, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Kind regards,

The team at Compuware

Strobe Usage Collector: assess the total value of ownership

Now more than ever, executives are demanding hard evidence of increased productivity and return on investment. With the cost of IT under constant scrutiny, you have been asked to justify value and prove ROI.

That may seem like a tall order, but you can now get this information from the best possible source: the tools themselves. Compuware’s Strobe is equipped with usage collectors that tell you exactly what you need to know to measure the return on your software investment. This is a no-charge service offered by Compuware.

The Strobe Usage Collector collects summary information including numbers of users, measurement sessions, distinct jobs measured, elapsed hours of measurement and CPU usage minutes measured. Counts of usage of each Strobe option, and the total number of completed measurements are tabulated. AutoStrobe initiated measurements including I/O threshold, CPU threshold, and elapsed threshold are also collected.

Value analysis

Analysis based on the collected data is used for computing potential productivity as well as a summary of actual usage. These metrics, provided via graphs, charts and spreadsheets take the guesswork out of determining productivity and resource utilisation savings.

Release requirements

  • Strobe 3.2 or higher

Contact us if you are interested in assessing the impact a change could have in your environment, by capturing actual usage data. A Usage Collector is also available for File-AID, Abend-AID, Hiperstation and Xpediter.

Tips and Techniques

Strobe Messages

As with any software, you will encounter messages when using STROBE. STROBE uses the standard message protocol of Information (I), Warning (W), Error (E), and Severe (S) messages. This tip will assist you in getting the message text and message description in an efficient manner.

Sometimes a message will appear when you are using the STROBE ISPF panels. Should you encounter a message in the top right corner, just hit the PF1 key. This will bring up a longer message for you to read. You can look up any STROBE message using the Messages option. To see an explanation of any STROBE message, select Option M (MESSAGES) from the STROBE OPTIONS menu. STROBE/ISPF displays the STROBE – DISPLAY MESSAGE TEXT panel. To view information about a message, type the numeric portion of the message identifier in the MESSAGE NUMBER field and press Enter. For example, to view detailed information about STROBE message STR0109W, type 0109 in the MESSAGE NUMBER field. For a description of all STROBE messages, see the STROBE MVS Messages manual available in hardcopy and softcopy.
A further message method is to type the line command .CVM from any panel. This command will bring up a panel with the last STROBE error messages that were encountered.

If you need to determine what level of STROBE you are using, there are various ways to do this. In ISPF, the version number and PTF level will be presented in the upper right corner. In a performance profile, the STROBE version and PTF level will be presented in the lower left of the Measurement Session Data report. If you encounter a problem when using STROBE that cannot be resolved by reviewing messages, you should open a problem with your systems programmer or internal technical support representative. He or she can then open a problem with Compuware STROBE support if it cannot be resolved internally.

White Papers

Reduce MIPS. Reduce IT Costs.

Compuware and Computerworld teamed up to analyse one of the costly IT challenges facing mainframe organisations – MIPS management.

Results from this recent survey were used to better understand MIPS usage and management within mainframe organisations. Commissioned by Compuware and fielded by Computerworld, the survey reveals valuable details for IT leaders seeking information on how their peers are addressing MIPS management, including growing MIPS consumption and increasing IT costs.

Is your organisation committed to controlling MIPS growth? If your organisation is not currently controlling MIPS growth, it’s worth considering since it can reduce costs substantially. If you are already managing your MIPS, it’s likely that you have opportunities to do this more effectively.

Compuware’s Application MIPS Management solution provides a proactive and systemic approach that enables organisations to reduce excessive MIPS. Our Application MIPS Management solution incorporates best-of-breed technology, expertise and proven best practices to identify and reduce application problems and faults that waste valuable MIPS.
