  Welcome from Pete Summers

Welcome to the December issue of Compuware Insight, the monthly newsletter for Compuware customers.

This month we bring you News of a survey that reveals the increasingly strategic role played by business analysts in the modern enterprise, and unveil a partnership between Compuware Covisint and identity management software vendor Initiate Systems Inc. that will help the healthcare industry share critical information in a secure environment.

In this issue’s Development section, you can get all the buzz from our recent CU2006 conference in Strasbourg (can you spot yourself in the video?). We’ve also got news of a greatly enhanced new version of Uniface JTi that should be of interest to those of you developing Web-based applications. You can also download a white paper on incorporating business rules into your applications with OptimalJ.

In the Quality section, learn how leading Irish bank Permanent TSB unravelled a perplexing problem with its web server traffic using Compuware’s Application Performance Assurance solutions. You can also register your interest in the beta programme for TrackRecord 6.3.0, our new software testing management tool, and read a fascinating article about the benefits of integrated testing and development.

Voice-over-IP is becoming increasingly popular with enterprises looking to reduce communications costs, and this is the focus of this month’s Performance section. We look at why three-quarters of Europe’s IT directors are worried about the quality and reliability of VoIP applications, and give you a comprehensive VoIP Resource Kit to help you iron out any performance issues with VoIP in your own organisation.

The Enterprise section features a very useful technical white paper on troubleshooting problems with IBM’s MQ messaging technology, and introduces a new service from Compuware’s Professional Services division: Application Modernisation for your legacy mainframe systems.

As always, I hope that you enjoy this issue of Insight and find it useful. We would love to receive your feedback, comments and questions, so please don’t hesitate to email us here.

May I also take this opportunity of wishing you and your family a very happy and relaxing holiday season.

Best wishes

Pete Summers, EMEA Marketing Director

  Application Performance Management

UK law firm ensures application availability through merger period
The merger of Pinsent and Masons created one of the UK’s ten largest law firms. While the newly merged firm continued its vital client-facing work, behind the scenes the IT department had the task of trying to streamline two completely different IT architectures with no loss of service to the business.
Most European IT directors worry about voice-over-IP quality
Almost three-quarters of Europe’s IT directors are worried about the quality and reliability of voice-over-IP communications, despite recognising the potential cost and productivity benefits of the technology, according to a new survey from Compuware.
Download our new Resource Kit for worry-free VoIP
The low cost of voice-over-IP communications is proving very attractive to enterprises, but almost three-quarters of companies who have deployed or plan to deploy it say they are still worried about quality and reliability.

Banish MQ-related performance problems
Many mission-critical business processes rely on IBM’s MQ messaging technology to communicate between mainframe applications and internal and external clients.  Yet identifying and resolving performance problems with MQ-related applications is notoriously difficult.

Reduce costs with legacy application modernisation
Legacy applications can still perform critical business functions and provide essential data, but as they grow older they become more complex and costly to manage.
